About this opportunity
The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), under the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs, is soliciting applicants to provide technical assistance and training services to strengthen tribal justice systems. The program seeks to deliver culturally responsive expertise to federally recognized Indian Tribes through both virtual and on-site mechanisms, including meetings, webinars, and peer-to-peer learning sessions, with the primary objective of preventing and reducing crime while addressing the impact of opioids, stimulants, and other illicit substances on tribal communities. Applicants must demonstrate capacity to deliver individualized assistance in developing, implementing, and enhancing justice systems while fostering collaboration with federal, state, and local partners. Proposals will be evaluated based on eligibility and responsiveness, merit, programmatic effectiveness, budget reasonableness, and organizational risk factors, as specified in the notice of funding opportunity. The application deadline is May 6, 2026, with awards anticipated to support tribal sovereignty and self-governance through comprehensive capacity-building initiatives.
Awards under this cooperative agreement are structured for up to 60 months of funding, with historical award amounts ranging from approximately $84,500 to $1.9 million, though specific funding levels for this solicitation should be verified in the complete NOFO. Performance and service delivery are required across tribal lands and communities throughout the United States and Alaska, with technical assistance provided through flexible delivery mechanisms tailored to individual tribal needs. Recipients must comply with Department of Justice financial management standards, maintain records for three years following submission of final expenditure reports, and adhere to audit requirements under 2 CFR Part 200.
