About this program
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) awards competitive Project Grants under the Urban, Indoor, and Other Emerging Agricultural Production Research, Education, and Extension Initiative (CFDA 10.333) to support research, education, and extension activities that develop urban, indoor, and emerging agricultural production systems. The most recent grant opportunity closed July 27, 2026.
NIFA has awarded 17 grants totaling $13 million in federal obligations since March 2023, with award activity declining from 12 grants in 2023 to 3 in 2024 and 2 in 2025. All awards have been Project Grants. The program funds the full food value chain from production through market development. Recent awards demonstrate concrete focus on hydroponic disease management ($960 thousand obligated for Pythium root rot detection and control in commercial greenhouses across the Northeast and Midwest); vertical farms, rooftop greenhouses, and floating farms sited through artificial intelligence decision support tools ($924,960 for research in the Miami region); building-integrated agriculture combining rooftop farming, green facades, and controlled-environment systems with closed-loop waste streams ($1 million); aquaponics optimization across multiple fish species and plant combinations tested at commercial facilities in different climate zones ($999,393); and hydroponic production of leafy greens and fruiting crops with optimization of temperature, dissolved oxygen, and biostimulants ($995,519). Awards also cover community-facing work: land-access mapping for urban farmers in Connecticut ($796,552), robotic high-tunnel integration for crop management and harvesting ($1 million), and food safety in hydroponic leafy green systems ($996,516).
Typical award magnitudes range from $570 thousand to $1 million. The FY 2026 priority focuses on identifying horticultural, social, and economic factors contributing to successful agricultural production in high-population-density settings, indoor and controlled-environment systems, and emerging approaches. Applications must include local community organizations on the project team, with priority given to multi-applicant collaborations. Project periods do not exceed five years.
