About this opportunity
The University of South Dakota is seeking a qualified firm to provide comprehensive trademark licensing and marketing services through a Request for Proposal (RFP) issued by its Marketing and University Relations department. The primary objectives include licensing the University's name and marks, marketing branded merchandise, and enforcing trademark rights, with a core goal of maximizing revenue and program effectiveness. Proposed vendors must demonstrate expertise in managing collegiate trademark programs, with specific capabilities including account management systems, pre-production product review, national exposure opportunities, and quarterly reporting. The RFP requires vendors to showcase successful experience increasing trademark royalty income for similar institutions and provide detailed marketing plans, information systems, license management strategies, and revenue projections. Key deadlines include a written inquiry deadline of January 12, 2026, vendor question responses by January 16, 2026, potential oral presentations on February 9, 2026, and an anticipated award decision by February 16, 2026, with the contract commencing April 1, 2026, for an initial three-year period.
The RFP does not specify set-aside designations or restrictions on responding organizations, indicating an open competitive procurement process. The University currently generates approximately $164,000 in annual gross royalty income from 184 licensed vendors utilizing 17 trademark logos and terms, with historical annual revenues ranging from $87,658 to $169,844 over the past decade. Required insurance includes commercial general liability ($1,000,000 per occurrence), professional liability ($1,000,000), business automobile liability ($1,000,000 per accident), and workers' compensation as mandated by South Dakota law. The contract does not establish a specific monetary ceiling, allowing compensation to be negotiated based on proposed costs, fees, and revenue expectations. Notably, the contract remains contingent on continued appropriated funds and legislative expenditure authority, which may impact the final award and contract terms. Potential vendors will need to submit comprehensive proposals addressing multiple service dimensions and demonstrating their capacity to enhance the University's trademark licensing program.
