About this opportunity

The Invitation to Bid issued by Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU) seeks a contractor to perform electrical improvements at the Parallel Pump Station located at 5601 Parallel Parkway in Wyandotte County, Kansas. The project involves a complex electrical equipment replacement, specifically the removal and installation of a new Motor Control Center (MCC) and two variable frequency drives (VFDs). Critical to the project is maintaining operational continuity, with a requirement that at least two pumps remain functional throughout the implementation. The contractor must sequentially remove and replace equipment, ensuring one VFD and half of the MCC are completed and operational before proceeding with subsequent components. The BPU has pre-purchased the VFDs and MCC, and the selected contractor will be responsible for all labor, equipment, and materials necessary for removal and installation according to detailed specifications. The bid is due on August 6, 2025, with the opportunity initially posted on June 30, 2025, providing potential bidders approximately five weeks to prepare and submit their proposals.

While specific set-aside designations are not explicitly detailed in the provided documentation, the project appears to be a standard public infrastructure improvement contract open to qualified electrical contractors with expertise in municipal utility infrastructure. The project's specialized nature suggests that bidders will need demonstrated experience in electrical systems for water utility infrastructure, particularly in pump station electrical upgrades. The contract requires precise, methodical work to ensure continuous water supply during the improvement process. Although a specific budget range is not provided, the complexity of the project and the requirement for specialized electrical work indicates a potentially significant contract value. The project's focus on maintaining operational continuity suggests that the selected contractor must have robust project management capabilities and the technical expertise to work within the constraints of an active municipal water infrastructure setting.
