About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Fiscal Year 2026 Tick-Borne Disease Research Program Therapeutic/Diagnostic Research Award, with a full application deadline of October 22, 2026, and a pre-application deadline of July 22, 2026. Applicants must be independent investigators at all career levels; individuals in mentored positions are ineligible. Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, domestic and foreign, for-profit and nonprofit entities. Cost sharing is not required.

The program expects to allot approximately $2.65 million to fund two awards, each capped at $1.325 million with a maximum period of performance of three years. Awards will be made no later than September 30, 2027, using FY26 funds expiring September 30, 2032.

The program supports product-driven therapeutic and diagnostic development research aimed at reducing the burden of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases. Treatment-focused applications must propose therapeutic evaluation studies designed to advance new ideas for drug or treatment discovery still in early or preclinical stages. Diagnosis-focused applications must propose diagnostic approaches readily integrated into clinical settings. Clinical trials are not permitted; preclinical and clinical research are allowed. Preliminary data are required. Applications proposing screening of publicly available compound libraries or tick-borne disease pathogenesis discovery are non-responsive.

The two-tiered review process includes pre-application screening, peer review of technical merit, and programmatic review evaluating research strategy, feasibility, impact, statistical planning, post-award transition plans, and personnel qualifications. Applications from Department of War investigators and multidisciplinary collaborations among academia, industry, the Department of War, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and other federal agencies are highly encouraged.

This opportunity is assigned to the Military Medical Research and Development program (CFDA 12.420). Full applications will be invited on September 3, 2026, following pre-application screening.
