About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for the Stephen I. Katz Early Stage Investigator Research Project Grant (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) with an application due date of August 25, 2028. The award is restricted to early stage investigators (ESIs) proposing a research project that represents a significant change in research direction from their previous focus or training, with no preliminary data permitted. If multiple Principal Investigators are proposed, all must be ESIs and the research direction must constitute a change for each.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) nonprofits, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations, and other specified entity types. Foreign organizations and foreign components of U.S. organizations are ineligible.

The Katz award supports an innovative project where the proposed research builds on the PD/PI's prior work and expertise as foundation but must not be an incremental advancement, expansion, or extension of previous research. The change in research direction could involve a new approach, methodology, technique, discipline, therapeutic target, or paradigm. Applications must include a separate attachment describing the change in research direction and must not include preliminary data. The proposed project must relate to the programmatic interests of one or more participating NIH Institutes and Centers based on their scientific missions. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact a program director before submission to discuss proposed research direction.

The opportunity is assigned to multiple federal grant programs including Cardiovascular Diseases Research (93.837), Lung Diseases Research (93.838), Cancer Cause and Prevention Research (93.393), Translation and Implementation Science Research for Heart, Lung, Blood Diseases, and Sleep Disorders (93.840), Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research (93.846), and NIH Office of Research on Women's Health (93.313), among others. Applications will undergo dual scientific peer review and secondary review by relevant National Advisory Councils. Award details including ceiling, floor, expected number of awards, and period of performance are not specified in the source material.
