About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health seeks applications from early-stage investigators (ESIs) for the Stephen I. Katz Early Stage Investigator Research Project Grant (R01), which supports innovative basic science experimental studies involving human participants where no preliminary data exist. Applicants must propose a project that represents a significant change in research direction from their previous work, drawing on prior expertise but constituting a distinct departure rather than incremental advancement, with all principal investigators required to be ESIs if multiple PIs are proposed. The research must align with the programmatic interests of participating NIH Institutes and Centers and must prospectively assign human participants to experimental conditions while assessing biomedical or behavioral outcomes for fundamental understanding without specific commercial application. Proposals will be evaluated on scientific merit, program relevance, and potential impact through peer review by non-NIH scientists followed by advisory council review. The application deadline is May 24, 2026, and interested applicants are strongly encouraged to contact a program director prior to submission to discuss their proposed research direction change.
Award amounts and project periods are not explicitly specified in the announcement but typically align with NIH R01 grant standards, which generally support project periods not exceeding five years with variable funding depending on the scope and complexity of proposed research. Research may be conducted at eligible domestic institutions including higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofit organizations, small businesses, tribal entities, state and local governments, and for-profit organizations nationwide. The grant mechanism is available to a broad range of applicant types, reflecting NIH's commitment to supporting early-stage investigator innovation across diverse institutional settings and organizational structures.

The Stephen I. Katz Early Stage Investigator Research Project Grant supports an innovative project that represents a change in research direction for an early stage investigator (ESI) and for which no preliminary data exist. Applications submitted to this Notice of Funding Opportunity Announcement (NOFO) must not include preliminary data. Applications must include a separate attachment describing the change in research direction. The proposed project must be related to the programmatic interests of one or more of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) based on their scientific missions. This Funding Opportunity is for basic science experimental studies involving humans, referred to in NOT-OD-18-212 as prospective basic science studies involving human participants. These studies fall within the NIH definition of a clinical trial and also meet the definition of basic research. Types of studies that should submit under this NOFO include studies that prospectively assign human participants to conditions (i.e., experimentally manipulate independent variables) and that assess biomedical or behavioral outcomes in humans for the purpose of understanding the fundamental aspects of phenomena without specific application towards processes or products in mind. Studies that are NOT conducted with specific applications toward processes or products in mind and which also do not meet the clinical trial definition should submit under the appropriate Clinical Trial Not Allowed NOFO .
