About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking small business concerns (SBCs) to participate in the Small Business Transition Grant for New Entrepreneurs program, which aims to facilitate the career development of investigators new to entrepreneurship. The grant specifically targets scientists and professionals with strong research, technology development, and/or healthcare delivery skills but limited entrepreneurial and independent research project leadership experience. Optimal candidates will work in a small business setting to develop promising technologies and products aligned with NIH's mission to improve health and save lives. The evaluation criteria will focus on the scientific merit of the proposed research, the qualifications of the principal investigator and supporting staff, the technological innovation of the research, and its potential for commercial application. The current funding opportunity was posted on April 26, 2024, with a due date of November 17, 2025.

While specific award amounts are not explicitly stated, this grant opportunity is structured as an R43/R44 Clinical Trial Required mechanism, typically supporting small business research and development efforts. The grant is designed to support entrepreneurial development simultaneously with research conduct, with a major component being training, mentoring, and career development for the Program Director/Principal Investigator. The research must be performed in the United States, and the principal investigator's primary employment (more than half-time) must be with the small business at the time of award and during the proposed project. The project period is likely to span multiple years, providing a comprehensive opportunity for scientific and entrepreneurial growth.
