About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is forecasting a Notice of Funding Opportunity to invite eligible United States small business concerns to submit Small Business Technology Transfer Phase I and Fast-Track grant applications for the Small Business Transition Grant, with applications not currently solicited but notice provided to allow sufficient planning time. Eligibility is restricted to United States small business concerns as defined by the Small Business Administration, and the principal investigator must be a first-time independent PD/PI who has never led an NIH or CDC research grant or corresponding peer-reviewed non-NIH research grant and must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident. Key personnel must include a mentor with measurable effort committed to the project. The funding mechanism utilizes the R41/R42 activity code and will support early-career scientists transitioning to entrepreneurship, with a major program component dedicated to entrepreneurial training, mentoring, and career development of the PD/PI alongside research and development efforts at the small business. The program is available under multiple parent Assistance Listings reflecting participating NIH institutes and centers: Lung Diseases Research (93.838), Cardiovascular Diseases Research (93.837), Translation and Implementation Science Research for Heart, Lung, Blood Diseases, and Sleep Disorders (93.840), Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research (93.846), Alcohol Research Programs (93.273), Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (93.279), Environmental Health (93.113), Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research (93.865), Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders (93.173), Oral Diseases and Disorders Research (93.121), Nursing Research (93.361), Medical Library Assistance (93.879), Biomedical Research and Research Training (93.859), Blood Diseases and Resources Research (93.839), Human Genome Research (93.172), Research and Training in Complementary and Integrative Health (93.213), Aging Research (93.866), National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (93.350), Vision Research (93.867), and National Center on Sleep Disorders Research (93.233). Applicants should begin identifying complementary industry mentors and career development resources immediately.

Forecast synopsis

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), including the participating Institutes, Centers and Offices, intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to invite eligible United States small business concerns (SBCs) to submit Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Phase I, and Fast-Track grant applications for the Small Business Transition Grant. Through this NOFO, NIH will support early-career scientists transitioning to entrepreneurship. In addition to funding research and development efforts at the SBC, a major component of this NOFO is entrepreneurial training, mentoring, and career development of the PD/PI.

Applications are not being solicited at this time. Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop responsive projects, including identification of complementary industry mentors and career development resources. This NOFO will utilize the R41/R42 activity code. United States small businesses that have the research capabilities and technological expertise to contribute to the R & D mission(s) of the NIH awarding components identified in this NOFO are encouraged to begin to consider applying for this new NOFO. This opportunity is available to first-time Principal Investigators, and key personnel must include a mentor with measurable effort committed to the project.
