About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health, including 21 participating Institutes and Centers (OD, NEI, NHLBI, NHGRI, NIAAA, NIAID, NIAMS, NIBIB, NICHD, NIDCD, NIDCR, NIDDK, NIEHS, NIGMS, NIMH, NINDS, NCATS, NCI, NIA, and ORWH), is forecasting a Notice of Funding Opportunity for the Commercialization Readiness Pilot (CRP) Program to solicit applications from small business concerns with application due date April 5, 2029. Eligible applicants are limited to United States small business concerns that received active NIH SBIR or STTR Phase II or Phase IIB awards within the last 36 months or have currently active Phase II/IIB awards within the missions of the participating NIH components. The program aims to facilitate transition of previously or currently funded SBIR and STTR Phase II and Phase IIB projects to commercialization by providing support for technical assistance and later-stage research and development not typically supported through Phase II or Phase IIB grants, including independent replication of key studies, IND-enabling studies, clinical studies, manufacturing costs, and regulatory assistance. Although significant work may be subcontracted, the SBC must maintain substantive oversight and management of all R&D activities throughout the award. Award budgets vary by participating institute, ranging from $500,000 to $2,000,000 with maximum project periods of three years. Clinical trials are optional under most participating components but not accepted for NHLBI, NHGRI, NIAID, NIAMS, NIBIB, NIDCR, NIDDK, NIEHS, NCATS, and ORIP. Applications are not currently being solicited; publication of this NOFO is contingent upon reauthorization and extension of the SBIR program. The notice uses the SB1 activity code and provides advance opportunity for potential applicants to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

This includes:Independent replication or confirmation of key studiesIND- or IDE-enabling studiesClinical studiesManufacturing scale-up and related quality activitiesRegulatory and other specialized technical supportSBCs may subcontract (outsource) a significant amount of the work in a CRP to meet the project goals.
