About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Individual Fellowship for Students at Institutions with NIH-Funded Institutional Predoctoral Dual-Degree Training Programs (Parent F30) with an application due date of May 7, 2028. Applicants must be predoctoral students matriculated in a combined MD/PhD, DO/PhD, DDS/PhD, AuD/PhD, or DVM/PhD training program at institutions with NIH-funded institutional predoctoral dual-degree training programs.
Eligible applicant types include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofit organizations (including 501(c)(3) entities), for-profit organizations, and small businesses. Non-domestic entities and non-U.S. components of U.S. organizations are not eligible; foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are allowed.
Candidates must propose an integrated research and clinical training plan and a dissertation research project in scientific health-related fields relevant to NIH Institutes and Centers missions. The fellowship supports candidates who do not propose to lead an independent clinical trial, clinical trial feasibility study, or ancillary clinical trial, though research participation in trials led by sponsors or co-sponsors is permitted. The training plan should document the need for mentored training, clearly enhance the individual's potential to develop into a productive independent physician/clinician-scientist, and facilitate transition to residency or other postdoctoral programs appropriate to the candidate's clinical degree and career goals.
The program falls under multiple parent CFDA numbers: Trans-NIH Research Support (93.310), Cardiovascular Diseases Research (93.837), and Lung Diseases Research (93.838). This is a forecast announcement; the formal NOFO has not yet been posted. No award ceilings, cost-share requirements, or specific evaluation criteria weighting are detailed in the source material.
Synopsis
This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) will support students at institutions with NIH-funded institutional predoctoral dual-degree training programs. The purpose of the Kirschstein-NRSA, dual-doctoral degree, predoctoral fellowship (F30) is to enhance the integrated research and clinical training of promising predoctoral students, who are matriculated in a combined MD/PhD or other dual-doctoral degree training program (e.g. DO/PhD, DDS/PhD, AuD/PhD, DVM/PhD), and who intend careers as physician/clinician-scientists. Candidates must propose an integrated research and clinical training plan and a dissertation research project in scientific health-related fields relevant to the missions of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers. The fellowship experience is expected to clearly enhance the individual's potential to develop into a productive, independent physician/clinician-scientist. This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is designed specifically for candidates proposing research that does not involve leading an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or an ancillary clinical trial, but does allow candidates to propose research experience in a clinical trial led by a sponsor or co-sponsor.
Eligibility
Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply. Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are allowed.
