About this opportunity

This Federal Grant Opportunity (Opportunity ID: 357494-F) from the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health supports research to address systemic and structural barriers and facilitators to improve the HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) care continuum for people who use substances. The funding is provided through R01 clinical trial grants and is open to a wide range of applicants including state/local governments, higher education institutions, nonprofits, and small businesses. The goal is to develop, implement, and evaluate effective strategies that meet the needs of people who use substances to improve PrEP awareness, uptake, and adherence. Proposals will be evaluated on their scientific merit, innovation, investigator qualifications, and approach to address disparities in PrEP access and utilization. The application deadline is March 12, 2025.

Typical grant awards under this opportunity are expected to range from $100,000 to over $1 million in total costs, with project periods of 2-5 years. The research activities are to be conducted at the facilities of the recipient organizations throughout the United States, often in collaboration with community partners serving minority and underserved populations.

Synopsis

Pre-exposure prophylaxis, also known as PrEP, is a safe, highly effective medication for preventing transmission of HIV from sex or injection drug use. Despite PrEPs high efficacy and its availability for over a decade, the awareness, uptake, and adherence of PrEP, especially among people who use substances remain suboptimal. The goal of this concept is to support research to examine and address systemic and structural factors that impede or facilitate the PrEP awareness, uptake, and adherence, among people who use substances. Projects will develop, implement, and evaluate effective strategies that meet the needs of people who use substances to improve the PrEP care continuum.
