About this opportunity
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is soliciting applications for cooperative agreements to pilot test, implement, and evaluate cervical, breast, and colorectal cancer clinical decision support tools integrated into electronic health record systems, with an application deadline not specified in this forecast.
Eligible applicants include state and territorial health agencies, tribal organizations and governments, county and city/township governments, special district governments, independent school districts, public and private higher education institutions, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, small businesses, for-profit organizations, public or Indian housing authorities, and other unrestricted applicant types.
The opportunity comprises two components. Component A focuses on system-wide implementation and evaluation of a publicly available cervical cancer CDS tool within a large health system, with emphasis on enhancing guideline-concordant screening and ensuring timely follow-up after abnormal results. Component B aims to pilot test publicly available, interoperable CDS tools for breast and colorectal cancer screening, including technical integration into real-world EHR systems, comprehensive documentation of implementation processes, and empirical evaluation of tool accuracy and impact.
Applicants are expected to rigorously assess both implementation processes and tool efficacy. The CDS tools integrate up-to-date, computable guidelines to support real-time clinical decision-making at the point of care.
This opportunity is assigned to the Assistance Programs for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control (CFDA 93.945). The cooperative agreement period of performance extends one to five years, with initial budget periods typically lasting twelve months. Projects demonstrating satisfactory progress may be continued non-competitively subject to fund availability. Applications will be evaluated on scientific and technical merit through objective or peer review, availability of funds, and relevance to program and CDC priorities.
Forecast synopsis
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion is advancing the development of clinical decision support (CDS) tools designed to facilitate evidence-based cancer screening and management at the point of care. These CDS tools integrate up-to-date, computable guidelines into electronic health records systems to support clinicians in real-time clinical decision-making. The CDC has previously developed computer algorithms for cervical, breast, and colorectal cancers.
This NOFO has two components:
- Component A. Cervical Cancer Clinical Decision Support (CDS) tool: This component focuses on the system-wide implementation and evaluation of a publicly available cervical cancer CDS tool within a large health system. The primary objective is to enhance guideline-concordant screening and ensure timely follow-up and management after abnormal results. Applicants are expected to rigorously assess both the implementation processes and the efficacy of the tool in improving cervical cancer screening and management.
- Component B. Breast and Colorectal Cancer CDS tools: This component aims to pilot test publicly available, interoperable CDS tools for breast and colorectal cancer screening. The scope includes technical integration of these tools into real-world electronic health record (EHR) systems within a large health system, comprehensive documentation of the implementation process, and empirical evaluation to assess the accuracy and impact of the tools.
