Five rolling submission windows open on September 25, 2026; January 25, 2027; May 25, 2027; September 25, 2027; and January 25, 2029, with scientific merit review conducted via peer review groups followed by Advisory Council review.
Programs may incorporate mentoring, courses, curriculum and methods development, outreach, and career development for high school students, science teachers, undergraduates, postbaccalaureates, graduate students, health professional students, postdoctoral scholars, clinical residents and fellows, and faculty. Applications must describe the research education program plan, program director/principal investigator qualifications and effort, faculty mentoring commitment, participant eligibility and recruitment strategy, institutional support, plans for instruction in reproducibility and responsible conduct of research, evaluation methodology, and dissemination strategy.
Participating NIH Institutes and Centers include the National Eye Institute, National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institute on Aging, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, National Institute of Nursing Research, National Library of Medicine, and National Cancer Institute, with co-funding from the Office of Research on Women's Health and the INCLUDE Project.
