About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health seeks applications for exploratory and developmental research projects supporting early-stage and conceptual basic science experimental studies involving human participants. This opportunity specifically targets prospective studies that experimentally manipulate independent variables to assess biomedical or behavioral outcomes in humans for understanding fundamental phenomena, without specific applications toward commercial products or processes in mind. Applicants must demonstrate alignment with the programmatic interests of one or more NIH Institutes and Centers based on their scientific missions. Applications will be evaluated on scientific merit, technical adequacy of experimental design and approach, investigator competency, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget justification, and relevance to program objectives. The application deadline is May 24, 2026, and proposed projects must fall within NIH's dual definition of both clinical trials and basic research as specified in NOT-OD-18-212.

The program supports a broad spectrum of eligible applicant types including higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofit organizations, government agencies, tribal entities, small businesses, and for-profit organizations. Award values and project periods will vary based on specific institute allocations and scientific merit, with typical NIH exploratory/developmental grants supporting early-stage research over limited funding periods. Research will be conducted at applicant organizations' facilities nationwide, with particular consideration given to projects from institutions historically underrepresented in NIH funding and early-stage investigators pursuing novel research directions in areas spanning cardiovascular, pulmonary, mental health, substance use, child health, communication disorders, nursing science, blood disorders, complementary and integrative health, aging, vision, and sleep disorders research domains.

Update #2 · Latest ·

The NIH Exploratory/Developmental Grant supports exploratory and developmental research projects by providing support for the early and conceptual stages of these projects. These studies may involve considerable risk but may lead to a breakthrough in a particular area, or to the development of novel techniques, agents, methodologies, models, or applications that could have a major impact on a field of biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research. This Parent Notice of Funding Opportunity is for basic science experimental studies involving humans, referred to in NOT-OD-18-212 as prospective basic science studies involving human participants. These studies fall within the NIH definition of a clinical trial and also meet the definition of basic research. Types of studies that should submit under this FOA include studies that prospectively assign human participants to conditions (i.e., experimentally manipulate independent variables) and that assess biomedical or behavioral outcomes in humans for the purpose of understanding the fundamental aspects of phenomena without specific application towards processes or products in mind. Studies conducted with specific applications toward processes or products in mind should submit under the appropriate Clinical Trials Required or Clinical Trial Optional FOA.The proposed project must be related to the programmatic interests of one or more of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) based on their scientific missions
