About this opportunity

The National Institute on Drug Abuse, with the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and National Cancer Institute, is soliciting linked collaborative U01 cooperative agreement applications to renew research project sites for the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study extended into young adulthood, with applications due July 9, 2026. Only current award recipients from RFA-DA-20-002, RFA-DA-20-003, or RFA-DA-20-004 are eligible to apply; this is a limited competition restricted to incumbent awardees.

NIDA intends to commit up to $223 million across fiscal years 2027–2031 to fund up to 21 research project site awards. The maximum project period is five years, with anticipated earliest start date of January 2027 and awards extending through April 2027. The ABCD-E study will continue longitudinal follow-up of approximately 12,000 participants (including 2,000 from multiple births) initially recruited at ages 9–10 through emerging adulthood using a common protocol including brain scans, biospecimen collection, neurocognitive assessments, and evaluations of substance use, mental and physical health, and other outcomes. The consortium structure requires three highly integrated components: research project sites (this NOFO), a single Data Analysis, Informatics, and Resource Center, and a single Coordinating Center, with the latter two solicited under companion NOFO RFA-DA-27-003.

Applications must employ a Multiple PD/PI structure with up to four PD/PIs and include an MPI Leadership Plan describing governance and succession planning. Applicants must submit linked applications via ASSIST, Grants.gov Workspace, or institutional system-to-system solutions and comply with all NIH registration requirements including SAM, eRA Commons, ORCID, and Grants.gov. Mandatory attachments address succession planning, research site metrics review, and community engagement strategies.

Peer review occurs in July 2026 with Advisory Council review in November 2026. Review criteria include significance and innovation, rigor and feasibility, and investigator expertise and resources, with additional considerations for human subjects protections and vertebrate animal use. Clinical trials are not allowed. Federal grant programs assigned include Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (93.279), Alcohol Research Programs (93.273), Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research (93.865), and Cancer Control (93.399).

Synopsis

This is a notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) for a Limited Competition that will invite applications from eligible organizations to apply. Please see Section III. Eligibility for additional information. In accordance with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) standard peer-review processes, the applications will be peer-reviewed, and only meritorious applications will be considered for funding. Only current award recipients will be eligible to apply. This NOFO seeks linked collaborative U01 applications to renew the current Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Research Project Sites to extend study visits into young adulthood. This renewal, called Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development - Extended (ABCD-E) study, is critical to be able to follow these youth into emerging adulthood, when many of the outcomes of interest (e.g., substance use disorders, mental health disorders, chronic diseases, and other health conditions) will manifest. The structure of the ABCD-E study Consortium shall consist of three highly integrated components: (1) a set of linked Research Project Sites, (2) a single central Data Analysis, Informatics, and Resource Center, and (3) a single overall Coordinating Center. As such, this NOFO runs in parallel with a companion NOFO that solicits applications for two centers (RFA-DA-27-003). It is expected that investigators, upon funding, will work jointly with NIH scientific staff to assist, guide, coordinate, or participate in project activities.
