About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for the Lasker Clinical Research Scholar's Program (Si2/R00 Clinical Trial Optional), a competitive career-development award with an application due date of July 7, 2028. This opportunity is restricted to clinical researchers—physicians, dentists, nurses, and equivalent clinical doctoral degree holders with professional licensure to practice clinically in the United States—in early stages of independent careers, generally post-fellowship but pre-tenure. Non-U.S. citizens may apply if they qualify for appropriate visa status. Foreign organizations and foreign components of U.S. organizations are not eligible.

The program offers a distinctive two-phase structure combining NIH intramural and extramural support. Phase 1 provides tenure-track appointments for up to 5–7 years within the NIH Intramural Research Program with independent research budgets, full salary, and benefits. Phase 2 allows recipients to either remain within the intramural program pursuing tenure or transition to extramural research at an eligible institution, receiving up to 3 years of NIH support (R00 mechanism) contingent on securing a full-time tenure-track position and successful programmatic review. For the extramural R00 phase, direct costs are capped at $499,000 per year; intramural budgets are negotiated with sponsoring institutes. The program anticipates funding up to 5 awards per cycle.

Applications must include four letters of reference submitted by the due date. The program spans 16 participating NIH institutes and centers. Eligible applicants include county governments, small businesses, tribal organizations, higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), state governments, and public or Indian housing authorities. Review emphasizes investigator accomplishments and potential alongside research project quality, with peer review followed by secondary review by appropriate advisory councils. Scientific merit criteria include significance, innovation, investigator qualifications, approach, and specific Phase 1 milestones with alternative strategies and feasibility assessments. Selected candidates may be invited for employment interviews at NIH and must provide additional eligibility documentation. Assistance Listing numbers are 93.310 (Trans-NIH Research Support) and 21 additional CFDA numbers spanning NHLBI, NCI, NIMH, NIDDK, NICHD, and other NIH institutes.
