About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for the Independent Scientist Award (K02) with a mandatory requirement that applicants serve as lead investigators of independent clinical trials, feasibility studies, or ancillary clinical trials, with applications due May 7, 2027. This FOA is decision-restrictive: applicants not proposing an independent clinical trial must apply to a companion FOA instead.

The award provides three to five years of salary support and protected research time for newly independent scientists. Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations, special districts, public or Indian housing authorities, and independent school districts. Ineligible are non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities and foreign components of U.S. organizations, though foreign components as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement are permitted. Domestic-only entities may apply; applicants should note that eligible applicant categories include Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving Institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs), Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities, faith-based or community-based organizations, and U.S. territories or possessions.

Each award is individually tailored to the candidate's career development needs. Applications are reviewed for scientific and technical merit by peer review and for program relevance by national advisory councils. The K02 is funded under multiple Assistance Listing numbers: Trans-NIH Research Support (93.310), Office of Research on Women's Health (93.313), Alcohol Research Programs (93.273), Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (93.279), Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (93.853), and Aging Research (93.866). Applicants must use Career Development-specific FORMS-H instructions per the attached application guidance (PKG00286048.pdf and PKG00288525.pdf).
