Clinical trial leads must apply to a companion FOA.
Eligible applicants include domestic public and private nonprofits, higher education institutions, state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations, special district governments, independent school districts, public or Indian housing authorities, for-profit organizations, small businesses, and other entities. The FOA also welcomes applications from historically Black colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, tribally controlled colleges and universities, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander serving institutions, faith-based or community-based organizations, eligible federal agencies, regional organizations, and U.S. territories or possessions. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible; however, foreign components of U.S. organizations are allowed.
The K02 award provides three to five years of salary support and protected research time for newly independent scientists to enhance their potential to make significant contributions to their field. Each award is tailored to meet individual candidate needs. No specific award ceiling, floor, or expected number of awards is provided in the source material.
The opportunity is available under multiple NIH Institutes and Centers, with co-funding potential through the Office of Research on Women's Health (CFDA 93.313) and Trans-NIH Research Support (CFDA 93.310), as well as funding under Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273), Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279), Oral Diseases and Disorders Research (CFDA 93.121), Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853), and Aging Research (CFDA 93.866). Applications undergo peer review for scientific and technical merit.
