About this opportunity

The Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking applicants for the "HEAL Initiative: Translating Research to Practice to End the Overdose Crisis (R33 Clinical Trial Optional)" funding opportunity. This Request for Application (RFA) aims to encourage translational dissemination and implementation research focused on addressing overdose deaths and the intersection of pain and Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). The grant opportunity is structured as an R33 clinical trial optional mechanism and works in conjunction with several Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) announcements covering specific focus areas. Eligible applicants include a wide range of entities such as higher education institutions, state/local governments, tribal organizations, nonprofits, and small businesses. The evaluation criteria will focus on the potential to translate research findings into practice to end the overdose crisis. The application deadline is March 20, 2025.

The grant awards will range in value, with recent federal grants under the related programs averaging between $50,000 to over $3 million in total costs. Typical project durations span 2-5 years, and the research activities will be conducted at the facilities of the recipient organizations across the United States.

Synopsis

This RFA will act as a parent RFA for the HEAL initiative Translation to Practice Team, specifically encouraging translational dissemination and implementation research focused on addressing overdose deaths and the intersection of pain and OUD. This RFA will function in tandem with targeted NOSIs that announce more specific areas of focus. For FY25, this currently includes the Workforce NOSI, the Exposure to Violence NOSI, and the Leveraging Inpatient Hospitalizations NOSI. It has a companion R61/R33 RFA.
