About this opportunity

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) is offering the FY 2025 Community Safety Grant (CSG), which provides $1 million in funding to nonprofit organizations. The grant aims to enhance the capability of communities to prepare for and respond to hazardous materials (HAZMAT) accidents and incidents, particularly those involving Class 3 flammable liquids by rail. Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits that can demonstrate the capacity to train state and local personnel in HAZMAT transportation safety or conduct community awareness programs. Applications are due by June 20, 2025, and will be evaluated based on technical, programmatic, and administrative criteria.

Individual grant awards will range from $100,000 to $500,000, with a performance period of 12-24 months starting on October 1, 2025. The grant is part of the Interagency Hazardous Materials Public Sector Training and Planning Grants program (CFDA 20.703) and aims to improve accident readiness in communities across the nation, potentially benefiting a wide range of constituents served by the nonprofit grantees.
