About this opportunity
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is soliciting cooperative agreement applications for research on travel-associated infectious disease surveillance and sentinel event detection, with full applications due November 5, 2026. Applicants may pursue Component A (clinic-based sentinel network), Component B (sentinel detection in international transportation hubs), or both; if ranked in the top tier for both, only Component B will be awarded. Eligible applicants include state and local governments, higher education institutions (public and private), tribal governments (federally recognized), public housing authorities, tribal organizations (not federally recognized), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, and for-profit organizations. Component A carries a five-year total award of $5 million ($1 million per 12-month budget period, minimum $750,000); Component B totals $25 million ($5 million per budget period, minimum $1 million). Two awards are expected—one per component. Research must address public health questions that improve outbreak detection speed, develop clinical guidelines, enhance understanding of disease natural history, optimize genomic surveillance and diagnostics, and advance U.S. global health security. The network will engage travel and tropical medicine providers in producing actionable surveillance data on disease prevention strategies, burden, severity, diagnostics, treatment interventions, and outcomes in international travelers. Performance period runs September 1, 2027 through August 31, 2032, with expected award date of August 2, 2027. A letter of intent is required by September 15, 2025. Recipients must establish data management plans for public health data sharing and comply with 2 CFR 200 and HHS grant requirements. The assistance listing is 93.084 (Prevention of Disease, Disability, and Death by Infectious Diseases).
Synopsis

Timely surveillance and sentinel detection are essential for collecting actionable data. The research should:Address public health questions that improve the speed of outbreak detection.Help develop guidelines and recommendations to improve patient care.Enhance understanding of the natural history of disease.Optimize genomic surveillance as well as diagnostic and treatment strategies.Advance the global health security of the United States. This NOFO will have two components:Component A - Clinic-based sentinel network.Component B - Sentinel detection in international transportation hubs. You may apply for Component A, B, or both. If your application for both Component A and B is ranked top, Component B will be awarded.
