About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the FY26 Toxic Exposures Research Program Translational Research Award (TRA) to support translational research that accelerates movement of promising ideas in military-related toxic exposure research into clinical applications, including health care products, interventions, technologies, and clinical practice guidelines, with a full application deadline of November 19, 2026.
Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, foreign and domestic entities, and for-profit and nonprofit organizations. Independent investigators at all career levels may serve as Principal Investigator or Partnering PI, though individuals in mentored positions are excluded. Applications proposing clinical trials, classified research, or research sensitive to national security concerns are not permitted.
The program expects to allot approximately six million dollars to fund roughly four applications with a total cost cap of 1.5 million dollars per award and a maximum performance period of three years. Awards will be made no later than September 30, 2027.
Applicants must address at least one of four program goals (Predict and Prevent, Diagnose, Treat, or combinations thereof) and at least one of four topic areas (Neurotoxin Exposure, Gulf War Illness and Its Treatment, Airborne Hazards and Burn Pits, or Other Military Service-Related Toxic Exposures). Preliminary data are required, and applications must clearly articulate translational potential, impact, military relevance, and a post-award transition plan for advancing research outcomes to clinical practice or commercialization.
The program includes a Partnering Principal Investigator Option allowing collaboration between two PIs with separate awards to each organization, intended to support interdisciplinary partnerships such as those between clinicians and research scientists. A two-step application process requires pre-application screening by August 19, 2026, followed by peer review and programmatic review of invited full applications. The Assistance Listing number is 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).
Synopsis
Summary: The intent of the fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Toxic Exposures Research Program (TERP) Translational Research Award (TRA) is to support translational research that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas in military-related toxic exposure research into clinical applications, including health care products, interventions, technologies and/or clinical practice guidelines. Translational research may be defined as an integration of basic science and clinical observations. New Approach Methodologies may also be used. Applications should provide evidence for the reciprocal transfer of information between basic and clinical science, or vice versa, in developing and implementing the research plan.
Distinctive Features: To encourage applications that include meaningful and productive collaborations, the FY26 TERP TRA includes a Partnering Principal Investigator Option (PPIO). One Principal Investigator (PI) is identified as the initiating PI, and an additional PI may be identified as a Partnering PI. If recommended for funding, each PI will be named on separate awards. The intent is to support interdisciplinary partnerships, such as those between clinicians and research scientists, that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas into clinical applications. Partnering should significantly advance the research beyond what would be possible through individual efforts.
