About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Spinal Cord Injury Research Program Investigator-Initiated Research Award, with full applications due November 12, 2026, and pre-applications due August 3, 2026. Applicants are unrestricted by organizational type; eligible entities include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, foreign and domestic entities, and for-profit and nonprofit organizations. Cost sharing is not required. The program expects to fund approximately six awards totaling $4.96 million. Award ceilings are $0.8 million for single-PI submissions or $0.96 million under the Early-Career Partnership Option, which allows two PIs with at least one designated as an early-career investigator (three to seven years of research experience beyond a terminal degree). Period of performance is three years maximum. Research must address at least one of four priority areas: Acute Injury Intervention, Secondary Health Effects, Psychosocial Well-Being, or Rehabilitation and Regeneration. Supported research spans basic through translational science phases, though studies focused solely on identifying intervention targets are discouraged. Clinical research is permitted; clinical trials are disallowed. Applications undergo two-tier review: peer review followed by programmatic review evaluating technical merit, military relevance, program priorities, and portfolio composition. Awards will be made no later than September 30, 2027, using FY26 funds expiring September 30, 2032. Under the Early-Career Partnership Option, if either the initiating or partnering PI's application is rejected or administratively withdrawn, all associated applications for that research project may be withdrawn. Each PI may be named on only one FY26 SCIRP IIRA application. CFDA 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).
Synopsis
Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Spinal Cord Injury Research Program (SCIRP) Investigator-Initiated Research Award (IIRA) supports studies that have the potential to make an important contribution to spinal cord injury (SCI) research, patient care and/or quality of life. May focus on any phase of research from basic through translational science, though studies that focus solely on identifying intervention targets are discouraged.
Distinctive Features:
• This funding opportunity contains an Early-Career Partnership Option, which allows for two Principal Investigators (PIs). If this option is selected, at least one of the named PIs must be an early-career investigator. Only the initiating PI will submit a pre-application, but all PIs will need to submit full applications. The partnering PI's application is an abbreviated package specific to their distinct portion of the research project. If recommended for funding, each PI will be named on a separate award to the recipient organization(s). Be advised, all associated applications for a research project may be withdrawn if the initiating or partnering application is rejected or administratively withdrawn.
