About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Spinal Cord Injury Research Program Clinical Trial Award, with a full application due November 12, 2026, and a pre-application due August 3, 2026. Applicants are unrestricted and include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, foreign and domestic entities, for-profit and nonprofit organizations, and public or private entities. The program allocates approximately $9.76 million to fund approximately 2 awards with total cost caps of $4.8 million for a single PI or $4.96 million for the Early-Career Partnership Option per award. An investigator may be named on only one FY26 SCIRP Clinical Trial Award application as a PI.

The program supports rapid implementation of clinical trials with significant potential impact on spinal cord injury treatment or management, spanning small proof-of-concept trials to large-scale efficacy trials. Research must address at least one of four priority areas: Acute Injury Intervention, Secondary Health Effects, Psychosocial Well-Being, or Rehabilitation and Regeneration. Period of performance is four years maximum, with awards anticipated by September 30, 2027 using FY26 funds expiring September 30, 2032.

All applications must name at least two SCI community partners (lived-experience consultants or community-based organization representatives) who will provide ongoing advice and consultation throughout planning and implementation. The Early-Career Partnership Option allows two Principal Investigators if at least one is an early-career investigator with 3–7 years of research experience post-terminal degree; the Initiating PI submits the pre-application while all PIs submit full applications, and if recommended for funding, each PI receives a separate award. Applications require detailed study population recruitment and safety plans, regulatory strategy documentation, and enrollment reporting by sex, race, and ethnicity. Applicants must register and submit results on ClinicalTrials.gov and participate in at least one Interim Progress Review. Peer review is scheduled for January 2027 and programmatic review for March 2027. The funding opportunity number is HT942526SCIRPCTA under CFDA 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).

Synopsis

Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Spinal Cord Injury Research Program (SCIRP) Clinical Trial Award (CTA) supports the rapid implementation of clinical trials with the potential to have a significant impact on the treatment or management of spinal cord injury (SCI).

Distinctive Features: This funding opportunity contains an Early-Career Partnership Option, which allows for two Principal Investigators (PIs). If this option is selected, at least one of the named PIs must be an early-career investigator. Only the Initiating PI will submit a pre-application, but all PIs will need to submit full applications. The Partnering PI's application is an abbreviated package specific to their distinct portion of the research project. If recommended for funding, each PI will be named on a separate award to the recipient organization(s). Be advised, all associated applications for a research project may be withdrawn if the initiating or partnering application is rejected or administratively withdrawn.

Applications to this funding opportunity must name at least two spinal cord injury (SCI) community partners (e.g., SCI Lived-Experience Consultants, representatives of community-based organizations) who will provide advice and consultation throughout the planning and implementation of the research project.
