About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for clinical translation research on spinal cord injury with a full application due November 12, 2026. This is a restricted mechanism requiring prospective clinical research or clinical trials; animal research and purely retrospective studies are ineligible. All applications must name at least two spinal cord injury community partners and demonstrate how lived-experience community input informed the research design.

Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, including foreign and domestic entities and nonprofits. Investigators may be named on only one FY26 SCIRP CTRA application as a principal investigator.

The program offers two funding tracks with different cost caps: a Single PI track capped at $2.0 million or an Early-Career Partnership Option (allowing two PIs, with at least one early-career investigator holding 3–7 years of research experience within their first faculty appointment) capped at $2.16 million combined. The period of performance is three years maximum. The Department expects to allot approximately $6.12 million to fund roughly three awards.

Research must address at least one of four priority areas: Acute Injury Intervention, Secondary Health Effects, Psychosocial Well-Being, or Rehabilitation and Regeneration. The program funds high-impact clinical research requiring preliminary studies such as feasibility, pilot, or optimization work to prepare for larger-scale clinical trials or implementation.

Pre-applications are due August 3, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. ET. Peer review is scheduled for January 2027 and programmatic review for March 2027. Awards will be made no later than September 30, 2027 using FY26 funds expiring September 30, 2032.

The assistance listing is CFDA 12.420, Military Medical Research and Development.

Synopsis

Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Spinal Cord Injury Research Program (SCIRP) Clinical Translation Research Award (CTRA) supports high-impact, new, or emerging clinical research that requires additional preliminary studies, such as feasibility, pilot, or optimization, to prepare for future larger-scale clinical trials or implementation. Primary objectives of this mechanism include:

• Accelerating the translation of current and emerging techniques or interventions into clinical use by addressing specific barrier(s) to clinical success for the purpose of de-risking or informing the design of definitive trials.

• Identifying the most effective diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation options to support critical decision-making for patients, clinicians, care partners and policymakers.

Distinctive Features:

• This funding opportunity contains an Early-Career Partnership Option, which allows for two principal investigators (PIs). If this option is selected, at least one of the named PIs must be an early-career investigator. Be advised, all associated applications for a research project may be withdrawn if the initiating or partnering application is rejected or administratively withdrawn.

• Applications to this funding opportunity must name at least two spinal cord injury (SCI) community partners who will provide advice and consultation throughout the planning and implementation of the research project.
