About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Reconstructive Transplant Research Program Concept Award to fund highly innovative new concepts or untested theories addressing reconstructive transplantation, with a full application deadline of November 4, 2026 and a Letter of Intent due October 21, 2026. Eligible applicants are unrestricted: extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, foreign and domestic entities, and for-profit and nonprofit organizations. No cost share is required. The CDMRP expects to allocate approximately $600,000 to fund roughly three awards, each capped at $200,000 with an 18-month maximum performance period. Awards will be obligated no later than September 30, 2027, using FY26 funds expiring September 30, 2032.
Applications must address at least one of four focus areas: improving VCA immunosuppression, identifying and validating biomarkers for monitoring VCA rejection and immunosuppression, advancing VCA preservation strategies, or developing tools for measuring VCA outcomes. The program explicitly does not support clinical trials. Presentation of preliminary data is not allowed; research that is an incremental advance upon published data is not considered innovative. Investigators must be at or above the postdoctoral fellow level and may serve as PI on only two FY26 RTRP Concept Award applications. Early-career investigators are encouraged to apply.
A two-tier peer and programmatic review process evaluates innovation, relevance, research strategy and feasibility, personnel qualifications, transition planning, research sharing plans, budget appropriateness, and institutional environment. Peer review occurs in January 2027; programmatic review follows in March 2027. Applications must adhere to rigorous study design standards (STROBE, CONSORT, SPIRIT, ARRIVE 2.0 guidelines) and include a project narrative, supporting documentation, statement of work, innovation statement, post-award transition plan, and sex as a biological variable strategy. The funding opportunity is assigned CFDA 12.420, Military Medical Research and Development.
Synopsis
Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Reconstructive Transplant Research Program (RTRP) Concept Award supports the exploration of highly innovative new concepts or untested theories that address an important problem relevant to reconstructive transplantation. The Concept Award does not support clinical trials.
Distinctive Features:
· Innovation: Innovative research may introduce a new paradigm, challenge existing paradigms, examine existing problems from new perspectives, or exhibit other highly creative qualities. Research that is an incremental advance upon published data is not considered innovative.
· Relevance: Projects should address at least one of the FY26 RTRP Focus Areas.
· Preliminary Data: Presentation of preliminary data is not allowed; however, applications should demonstrate the ability to achieve interpretable results. A rationale for the proposed work must be provided.
· Early-Career Investigators: Early-career investigators are encouraged to apply. Investigators at or above the level of postdoctoral fellow are eligible to apply.
