About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Fiscal Year 2026 Rare Cancers Research Program Idea Development Award, with a full application due date of November 18, 2026. The program expects to fund approximately 15 awards totaling $7.35 million, with a per-award ceiling of $490,000 over a maximum three-year performance period.
Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, foreign and domestic entities, and for-profit and nonprofit organizations. Independent investigators at all career levels may serve as Principal Investigator; each investigator may be named on only one FY26 RCRP IDA application. Cost share is not required.
The program defines rare cancers as those affecting six or fewer persons per 100,000 annually in the United States and supports research in Biology, Preclinical Research Models, Therapy, and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning. Clinical trials are prohibited. The program encourages applicants to include an exploratory aim or sub-aim to support discovery-driven research. Preliminary data with disease-specific rationale are required; these data need not originate from studies of the proposed rare cancer type or subtype under study. Direct cost restrictions apply: applicants may request travel for multi-institutional collaborations and costs for one investigator to attend one scientific/technical meeting per year, but cannot request clinical trial costs, tuition, or costs for additional meeting travel.
Pre-applications are due August 19, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time through eBRAP, with invitations to submit full applications issued by September 30, 2026. Full applications are submitted through Grants.gov (extramural) or eBRAP (intramural DOW organizations). Peer review is scheduled for February 2027, programmatic review for March/April 2027, and awards are expected by September 30, 2027. Funded awards use FY26 funds that expire September 30, 2032. The Assistance Listing number is 12.420.
Synopsis
Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Rare Cancers Research Program (RCRP) Idea Development Award (IDA) promotes ideas that are ready for further development and have the potential to yield high-impact findings and new avenues of investigation.
Distinctive Features:
- The RCRP encourages applicants to include an exploratory aim or sub-aim to support any necessary discovery-driven research.
- Preliminary data with disease-specific rationale are required. However, these data do not necessarily need to originate from studies of the proposed rare cancer type(s)/subtype(s) under study.
- Research should have high potential impact on rare cancers and the patient community.
