About this opportunity

The Defense Health Agency (DHA) is soliciting applications for the Neurofibromatosis Research Academy - Scholar Award (NFRA-SA) to support early-career independent investigators pursuing neurofibromatosis research with applications due September 22, 2026. This award requires Scholars to commit no less than 25% effort for the first two years and maintain approximately 50% protected time for neurofibromatosis research and Academy activities.

Eligibility is unrestricted across extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, including foreign and domestic entities and for-profit and nonprofit organizations. The Scholar, named as Principal Investigator, must be within ten years of completion of their terminal degree (excluding residency, clinical training, or family medical leave) by the application deadline. Each Scholar must designate a Career Guide—an established neurofibromatosis researcher at the Associate Professor level or equivalent with a record of neurofibromatosis funding and publications. The Career Guide may be at a different institution; if so, a secondary Career Guide at the Scholar's institution is required.

The DHA expects to award approximately $3.6 million total to fund approximately three applications, with a maximum award of $1.2 million per application and a maximum performance period of 4 years. Pre-applications are due September 8, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Full applications must address at least one FY26 NFRP Strategic Goal and at least one Area of Emphasis, including NF2 and schwannomatosis research, biomarker discovery, data science applications, non-tumor manifestations, genetics and genomics, preclinical efficacy studies, and health services research. Clinical trials are not permitted. Applications use a two-step submission process through eBRAP (pre-applications) and either Grants.gov (extramural) or eBRAP (intramural) for full applications, evaluated through two-tier peer and programmatic review. Awards will be made by September 30, 2027 using FY26 funds expiring for use on September 30, 2032. This opportunity falls under Assistance Listing 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).

Synopsis

Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Neurofibromatosis Research Program (NFRP) Neurofibromatosis Research Academy - Scholar Award (NFRA-SA) supports early-career independent investigators (Scholars) joining the Neurofibromatosis Research Academy to pursue a neurofibromatosis project that may include basic, translational, and/or clinical research. The proposed research should address at least one of the FY26 NFRP Areas of Emphasis, under the leadership of the NFRA Director and Deputy Director. The overarching goal of the NFRA is to conduct innovative and impactful research in the field of neurofibromatosis disorders while developing successful, highly productive NF researchers in a collaborative research and career development environment.

Distinctive Features:

• Scholar: The Scholar, named as the Principal Investigator, must be less than 10 years of completion of their terminal degree by the time of the application deadline (excluding time spent in residency, clinical training, or on family medical leave).

• Career Guide: This award mechanism requires each Scholar to designate a Career Guide for guidance. The Career Guide is not required to be at the same institution as the Scholar; however, if the (primary) Career Guide is from a different institution, the application must identify a secondary Career Guide at the Scholar's institution.
