About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Neurofibromatosis Research Program Investigator-Initiated Research Award (IIRA) supporting high-impact research addressing critical needs in neurofibromatosis (NF1, NF2, and schwannomatosis) disorders, with a full application deadline of September 22, 2026. Eligible applicants include domestic and foreign entities—both for-profit and nonprofit organizations, public and private entities, and both extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations. Principal Investigators must be at or above the level of assistant professor (or equivalent) and commit at least 10% effort annually throughout the award period.

Research projects may focus on any phase of research, excluding clinical trials, and must include preliminary and/or published data relevant to neurofibromatosis. The program emphasizes NF2 and schwannomatosis-related topics, biomarker discovery, data science applications, non-tumor manifestations (pain, cognitive issues, sleep), phenotype heterogeneity, genetics and genomics, preclinical efficacy studies, drug discovery, and health services research.

The program expects to allot approximately $6.04 million to fund approximately five Level 1 applications capped at $840,000 each and two Level 2 applications capped at $920,000 each. Level 2 funding is available for applications incorporating either the NF Open Science Initiative (promoting early data access and sharing within the neurofibromatosis community through the NF Data Portal) or a Qualified Collaborator option (encouraging collaborative research between basic and clinical scientists, or academic and biotechnology scientists). The period of performance is three years maximum. A Letter of Intent is due September 8, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time through eBRAP. Peer review is scheduled for December 2026, with programmatic review in March 2027, and awards are anticipated by September 30, 2027. The program is funded under CFDA 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).

Synopsis

Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Neurofibromatosis Research Program (NFRP) Investigator-Initiated Research Award (IIRA) supports high-impact research that addresses a critical need and has the potential to make important contributions to the field of neurofibromatosis disorders or advance patient care. Research projects may focus on any phase of research, excluding clinical trials. The rationale for a research idea may be derived from laboratory discovery, population-based studies, a clinician's firsthand knowledge of patients, or anecdotal data. Applications must include preliminary and/or published data that are relevant to NF and the proposed research project.

Distinctive Features: This award mechanism offers two funding levels based on participation in two optional features:

• Open Science Initiative: Catalyzes research for neurofibromatosis through early access to data and data sharing within the neurofibromatosis community.

• Optional Qualified Collaborator: Encourages collaborative research between basic scientists and clinical researchers, and between academic and biotechnology scientists.

The funding levels are defined as follows:

• Level 1: Applications without an optional feature.

• Level 2: Applications including one of the optional features.
