About this opportunity
The Defense Health Agency is soliciting applications for the Department of the Army Medical Command Epilepsy Research Program Idea Development Award, with a letter of intent due August 3, 2026 and full applications due August 17, 2026. The program will fund approximately two awards of up to $1.0 million each over a maximum three-year period from a total allocation of approximately $2.0 million. Cost sharing is not required.
Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, including foreign and domestic, for-profit and nonprofit entities. Investigators at all career levels may serve as Principal Investigator; however, new for FY26, an investigator may be named on only one ERP Idea Development Award application as PI.
The program seeks novel research that innovatively challenges existing research paradigms and represents a new research direction for the investigator, rather than extending previously published findings or continuing established lines of research. Applications must address at least one of four focus areas: Markers and Mechanisms of Post-Traumatic Epilepsy, Epidemiological Characterization of Post-Traumatic Epilepsy, Longitudinal Studies of Post-Traumatic Epilepsy Progression, or Innovative Research Tools and Technologies. The research should increase understanding of post-traumatic epilepsy and associated comorbidities to improve quality of life, especially in Service Members, Veterans, and their care partners. Clinical trials are not permitted.
Pre-applications (Letter of Intent) are submitted via eBRAP by August 3, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. ET. Full applications from extramural organizations are submitted through Grants.gov; intramural DOW organizations submit through eBRAP by August 17, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Applications undergo two-tier peer and programmatic review, with peer review scheduled for October 2026, programmatic review in December 2026, and awards anticipated by September 30, 2027.
The Assistance Listing number is 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).
