About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Fiscal Year 2026 Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Research Program Clinical/Translational Research Award, with full applications due September 18, 2026. Applicants are unrestricted. The program expects to allot approximately $8.46 million to fund roughly six applications, with awards anticipated by September 30, 2027.
Two funding levels operate with different cost ceilings and performance periods. Funding Level 1 supports smaller, less complex preclinical and/or clinical research with maximum costs of $0.91 million for single principal investigators or $1.0 million for partnering PI options, with a maximum three-year performance period. Funding Level 2 supports larger, more complex research with costs capped at $1.75 million for single PIs or $1.90 million for partnering options, with a maximum four-year performance period.
A Partnering PI Option (PPIO) accommodates meaningful collaborations between two investigators. Two PPIO eligibility categories apply: an Early-Career Partnering PI category for independent, early-career investigators within ten years of their first faculty appointment (or equivalent) by application submission; and an Established Interdisciplinary Partnering PI category for independent investigators at all academic levels, or equivalent, in areas other than muscular dystrophy, seeking to transition to a career in DMD and bring their expertise to the field.
Research must address at least one of the FY26 CTRA focus areas. Research projects investigating therapies efficacious across the life span are strongly encouraged. Preliminary data or published data are required for all applications. Pilot clinical trials and clinical trial readiness studies to better inform development of drugs, devices, and other interventions are allowed.
Assistance Listing 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development) funds this opportunity. Pre-applications were due September 4, 2026. Peer review is scheduled for December 2026, and programmatic review for February 2027.
Synopsis
Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Research Program (DMDRP) Clinical/Translational Research Award (CTRA) supports advanced translational research to accelerate promising ideas in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) research toward clinical applications. Research must address at least one of the FY26 CTRA Focus Areas. Research projects investigating therapies that will be efficacious across the life span are strongly encouraged.
Distinctive Features: The FY26 CTRA offers two funding levels:
• Funding Level 1 to support smaller, less complex preclinical and/or clinical research.
• Funding Level 2 to support larger, more complex preclinical and/or clinical research.
The FY26 CTRA also offers a Partnering PI Option (PPIO) to support meaningful and productive partnerships between two investigators collaborating on the proposed research project. The PPIO has two eligibility categories:
• Early-Career Partnering PI category for an independent, early-career investigator within 10 years of their first faculty appointment (or equivalent) by the time of application submission.
• Established Interdisciplinary Partnering PI for independent investigators at all academic levels, or equivalent, in an area other than muscular dystrophy, seeking to transition to a career in DMD, thereby bringing their expertise to the field.
Preliminary data are required for all applications. Pilot clinical trials and clinical trial readiness studies to better inform development of drugs, devices, and other interventions are allowed.
