About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command (through the Defense Health Agency's Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs) is soliciting applications for the Fiscal Year 2026 Autism Research Program Career Development Award, with a full application deadline of October 22, 2026, preceded by a pre-application deadline of July 27, 2026.

Applicant types are unrestricted. Principal Investigators must hold a Ph.D., M.D., M.D./Ph.D., or equivalent; must not have received a Career Development Award previously from any federal funding agency; must not have received more than $250,000 in total direct costs for previous autism research as a PI; and must not be a graduate student, postdoctoral fellow, or other mentored researcher.

The program expects to fund approximately two awards with a total cost cap of $750,000 per award and a maximum period of performance of three years. No cost share is required. Awards will be made using FY26 funds expiring September 30, 2032, with awards expected no later than September 30, 2027.

The award supports early-career independent investigators and established investigators transitioning from other research fields to conduct innovative, high-impact autism research or early-phase, proof-of-principle clinical trials. Applications addressing one of seven designated areas of interest (novel therapeutics, evidence-based practice dissemination, diagnosis and treatment efficacy, healthcare provider training, environmental risk factors, quality of life for military families, and key life transitions) are strongly encouraged. Applications with pilot clinical trial components must include community collaborations with Autistic individuals, caregivers, or community-based organizations who will provide advice and consultation throughout planning and implementation.

All projects must adhere to rigorous study design standards per STROBE, CONSORT, SPIRIT, and ARRIVE 2.0 guidelines. Peer review occurs in December 2026; programmatic review in February 2027. The Assistance Listing is 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).
