About this opportunity
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health, is forecasting a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to support research on discovery and development of interventions to prevent and treat substance use disorders and overdose, with an application due date of August 21, 2028. This funding opportunity is not currently accepting applications; the forecast provides advance notice for potential applicants to develop collaborations and responsive projects.
Eligible applicants include city and township governments, state and county governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and non-federally recognized tribal organizations), public and private higher education institutions, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, for-profit organizations, small businesses, special district governments, independent school districts, public or Indian housing authorities, faith-based or community-based organizations, U.S. territories or possessions, eligible federal agencies, and non-domestic entities.
The NOFO will utilize the UG3/UH3 cooperative agreement activity code and is assigned to the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279). NIDA encourages collaborative investigations combining expertise across pharmacology, toxicology, medicinal chemistry, neuromodulation, digital interventions, clinical trials, and regulatory science. Supported research includes both preclinical and clinical studies designed to advance candidate interventions toward regulatory approval or clinical adoption. The program typically supports project periods of up to five years. Awards are made directly to applicant institutions following scientific merit review and National Advisory Council approval.
Synopsis
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to solicit grant applications to support research on the discovery and development of interventions to prevent and/or treat substance use disorders (SUDs) and overdose, including medications and medical devices to treat co-morbid SUDs. This includes preclinical and clinical research studies that will have high impact and quickly yield the necessary results to advance candidate interventions closer to regulatory approval or clinical adoption. This NOFO will utilize the UG3/UH3 activity code.
Eligibility
Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; U.S. Territory or Possession.
