About this opportunity

The Department of the Interior's Office of Wildland Fire is seeking applications from U.S. local governments with fire protection responsibilities to acquire slip-on tanker units. These specialized units enable existing vehicles to be quickly converted into operational fire engines, enhancing wildland fire response capabilities. The funding opportunity has technical specifications for the slip-on units and requires applicants to demonstrate at least moderate wildfire risk in their service areas with populations under 50,000. Applications will be evaluated based on the vehicle specifications, certification, and the applicant's fiscal management capabilities. The application deadline is March 14, 2025, with awards expected between June 6 and September 15, 2025.

The total anticipated funding for this opportunity is $20 million, with 75-125 expected awards ranging from $10,000 to $500,000 each. Up to 25 awards will be reserved for consolidated applications from multiple eligible entities. There is no cost sharing requirement for this grant program, which is part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law's initiatives to support communities facing wildland fire threats.

Update Description of NOFO. -

Wildfire activity is increasing. Drought and prolonged, increased temperatures are creating conditions that allow wildfires to start earlier in the year, enable them to last longer, and make them more difficult to control. Increasingly intense wildfires and prolonged droughts then lead to an influx of invasive species that burn more easily than native vegetation and in turn propel still more extreme wildfire activity. As a result, wildfires are now occurring in places where they were previously extremely rare, with more land burning, on average, each year. This is leading to a year-round wildfire season, now referred to as a fire year, throughout the country. The frequency of large wildfires is also increasing, particularly near communities. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), enacted in November 2021, is bringing much-needed support to communities across the country to increase the resilience of lands facing the threat of wildland fires and to better support federal wildland firefighters. The BIL provides funding and authorizes the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) to develop and implement a pilot program to provide local governments with financial assistance to acquire slip-on tanker units to establish fleets of vehicles that can be quickly converted to be operated as fire engines. The objective of this opportunity is to provide funding for these units that meet the required minimum specifications as outlined in Attachment 1.

Update #1 ·

Climate change is driving the devastating intersection of extreme heat, drought, and wildland fire danger across the United States, creating wildfires that move with a speed and intensity previously unseen. This has created conditions in which wildfires overwhelm response capabilities, resulting in billions of dollars in economic losses, damage to natural resources, devastation to communities, and the tragic loss of human life.
