Slip-on Tanker Units
The Department of the Interior (DOI) is offering grants through its Wildfire Management - Preparedness program (CFDA 15.088) to provide local governments with financial assistance to acquire slip-on tanker units. The objective is to establish fleets of vehicles that can be quickly converted to fire engines, thereby increasing wildland fire response capabilities amid worsening conditions from climate change. Eligible applicants are local governments with fire protection responsibilities. Proposals will be evaluated based on the population served and prioritized for areas with the highest wildfire risk. The application deadline is June 4, 2024. The grant program, established under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will cover the costs of the slip-on tanker units and their installation, as long as they meet the minimum specifications outlined in the solicitation. There is no specific budget range disclosed, but the funding is intended to support the acquisition of these specialized units by local governments across the country to bolster their wildfire preparedness and management efforts.

Department of Interior (DOI), Office of Wildland Fire (OWF) - Slip-on Tanker Units
The Department of the Interior's Office of Wildland Fire is seeking applications from U.S. local governments to acquire slip-on tanker units that can quickly convert vehicles into fire engines. This grant opportunity, funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, aims to enhance wildfire response capabilities by providing locally-operated fire protection fleets. Eligible applicants must serve areas with populations under 50,000 and demonstrate at least moderate wildfire risk. Applications will be evaluated based on technical specifications, vehicle certification, and fiscal management criteria. The deadline for submissions is March 14, 2025. The Department of the Interior anticipates making 75-125 awards ranging from $10,000 to $500,000 each, with up to 25 awards reserved for consolidated applications from multiple entities. The total available funding is $20 million, and awards are expected to be issued between June 6 and September 15, 2025. There is no cost-sharing requirement for this grant program.
