About this opportunity
The U.S. Department of Education, through the Charter Schools Program (CFDA 84.282A), seeks applications from state entities—including state educational agencies, state charter school boards, governors, and statewide charter school organizations—to support the opening of new charter schools and the replication and expansion of high-quality charter schools. Eligible applicants must demonstrate that all authorized public chartering agencies in their state implement best practices for charter school authorizing and must address one absolute priority and choose from seven competitive preference priorities addressing diverse charter models, equitable financing, facilities support, and serving at-risk students. Applicants will be evaluated on four selection criteria: quality of project design (30 points), quality of eligible applicants receiving subgrants (15 points), state plan (35 points), and quality of management plan (20 points). Key requirements include using at least 90 percent of grant funds for subgrants to eligible applicants, reserving at least 7 percent for technical assistance, and limiting administrative costs to no more than 3 percent. The application deadline is June 18, 2026, with an intergovernmental review deadline of August 18, 2026.
Award amounts are estimated between $2,000,000 and $20,000,000 per grant, with an average award of $9,000,000 annually, and an estimated total of $60,000,000 available for 3-6 awards. Grant recipients must operate under project periods of up to 60 months, with subgrantees receiving a maximum of $2,000,000 per new or replicated charter school over the 5-year period. Performance will take place within applicant states and served by the charter schools established or expanded through subgrant awards.
