About this opportunity

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), in partnership with the National Eye Institute, National Institute on Aging, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institute of Mental Health, National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, and Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research, is soliciting cooperative agreement applications to accelerate dissemination of developed and validated BRAIN Initiative technologies and resources to the neuroscience research community, with the first application due October 6, 2026.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments, and other specified entity types. Foreign organizations and foreign subawards are not eligible; foreign components and unfunded collaborations are permitted. The program awards an estimated $10 million annually across 10 to 20 awards. Project periods extend up to five years with one renewal possibility.

Applicants must demonstrate that the resource is well-validated and ready for broad dissemination by early year two and must disseminate an existing resource through activities including distribution of tools and reagents, user training on technologies or techniques, access to technology platforms and specialized facilities, minor improvements to resource production and delivery, or minor technology adaptations to meet user community needs. Applications must include a steering committee with at least three established researchers, quality assurance mechanisms, sustainability plans beyond the funding period, and resource allocation prioritization. Projects developing novel unproven technologies, lacking clear validation, or supporting clinical trials are not responsive.

Review criteria emphasize significance to neuroscience research, investigator experience with service-oriented efforts, innovation of the dissemination approach, feasibility of the operational plan and timeline, and adequacy of institutional support. Applications are due by 5:00 PM local time on October 6, 2026 (first cycle), June 10, 2027, and June 10, 2028. The CFDA number is 93.372.

Synopsis

This notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) supports efforts to disseminate resources for integration into neuroscience research practice. The resource(s) should be relevant to the goals of the BRAIN Initiative as outlined in the "BRAIN 2025: A Scientific Vision" and "The BRAIN Initiative 2.0: From Cells to Circuits, Toward Cures" and shared broadly to the neuroscience community. The resource(s) should address compelling needs of neuroscience researchers that are otherwise unavailable or impractical in their current form. Activities must include dissemination of an existing resource, and may include one or more of the following activities: distribution of tools and reagents; user training on the usage of new technologies or techniques; providing access to existing technology platforms and/or specialized facilities; minor improvements to increase the scale/efficiency of resource production and delivery; minor adaptations to meet the needs of a user community.

Eligibility

Refer to Section III. Eligibility Information in the NOFO for additional information on eligibility.Foreign Organizations/Foreign CollaborationsNon-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply.Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply.Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are allowed.NIH will no longer issue awards (i.e., new, renewal, or non-competing continuation) to domestic or foreign entities that involve foreign subawards/subcontracts. All NIH-funded research involving foreign subawards/subcontracts must be submitted in response to a NOFO that is specifically designated for funded international collaborations. This new requirement was effective, May 1, 2025.Applications involving foreign subawards/subcontracts submitted in response to this NOFO will be deemed noncompliant and will not be considered for funding. This policy applies to all monetary international collaborations resulting in foreign subawards/subcontracts, however, it does not preclude unfunded international collaborations or foreign components, funding for foreign consultants, or procurement of unique equipment or supplies from foreign vendors.
