About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health seeks applicants for Bioengineering Research Grants (BRG) (R01 Clinical Trial Optional) under PAR-27-072, with rolling application due dates through July 5, 2029. The program does not require cost sharing and offers no single-award ceiling or floor; annual direct costs are limited to less than $500,000 per year with maximum project periods of five years.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits with and without 501(c)(3) status, for-profit organizations, county and city/township governments, state governments, special district governments, independent school districts, tribal governments (federally recognized and non-federally recognized), tribal organizations, public or Indian housing authorities, and small businesses. Non-domestic entities are eligible; however, foreign subawards or subcontracts are prohibited unless specifically authorized.

The NOFO encourages multidisciplinary collaborations between life and physical sciences that apply bioengineering approaches to solve biomedical problems through design-directed, developmental, discovery-driven, or hypothesis-driven research appropriate for small teams. Applicants may propose integration, optimization, validation, or translation of tools, methods, and techniques for basic, translational, or clinical problems. The program will support clinical trials that test functionality or validate performance in the chosen setting but explicitly excludes conventional clinical trials lacking translation as primary motivation and phase III clinical trials in any research area. Commercial production is not supported.

Participating institutes are the National Cancer Institute, National Eye Institute, Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Applications are reviewed by the Center for Scientific Review using three scored criteria: (1) Importance of the Research (Significance and Innovation), (2) Rigor and Feasibility (Approach), and (3) Expertise and Resources (Investigator(s) and Environment), with emphasis on whether engineering and computational approaches are appropriately integrated. A Data Management and Sharing Plan is required.

The opportunity is assigned to eight Assistance Listing numbers: 93.399 (Cancer Control), 93.393 (Cancer Cause and Prevention Research), 93.394 (Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research), 93.395 (Cancer Treatment Research), 93.396 (Cancer Biology Research), 93.865 (Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research), 93.853 (Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders), and 93.867 (Vision Research).

Synopsis

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) encourages collaborations between the life and physical sciences that: 1) apply a multidisciplinary bioengineering approach to the solution of a biomedical problem; and 2) integrate, optimize, validate, translate or otherwise accelerate the adoption of promising tools, methods, and techniques for a specific research or clinical problem in basic, translational, or clinical science and practice. An application may propose design-directed, developmental, discovery-driven, or hypothesis-driven research and is appropriate for small teams applying an integrative approach to increase our understanding of and solve problems in biological, clinical, or translational science. This NOFO will support clinical trials that test functionality or validate performance in the chosen setting. This NOFO is not intended to support conventional clinical trials that lack translation as the primary motivation. Applications that propose phase III clinical trials in any area of research are not sought by and will not be supported through this NOFO. This NOFO does not support commercial production.

Eligibility

Refer to Section III. Eligibility Information in the NOFO for additional information on eligibility.Foreign Organizations/International Collaborations:Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are eligible to apply.Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are eligible to apply.Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are not allowed.
