About this opportunity
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is seeking grant applications for Archival Projects through the National Historical Publications and Records Grants program. The grants aim to improve online public discovery and use of historical records collections, with a particular emphasis on collections documenting the histories of underrepresented groups, founding ideals, and the evolution of the nation's legal history. Eligible applicants include city/township governments, state governments, higher education institutions (public and private), tribal governments, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, and county governments. Applications will be evaluated based on their ability to engage the public, expand civic education, and promote understanding of U.S. history, democracy, and culture. The application deadline is November 5, 2025.
Typical grant awards for this program range from $25,000 to $4,500,000, with recent awards including $1,999,047 to the University of Southern Mississippi, $2,796,000 to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and $10,000,000 to Alaska Leaders Archive, Inc. The performance locations for these projects are typically at the recipient institutions across the United States, with a focus on preserving and providing digital access to historical documentation.
Synopsis
The NHPRC seeks archival projects that will significantly improve online public discovery and use of historical records collections. We welcome projects that engage the public, expand civic education, and promote understanding of the nation's history, democracy, and culture from the founding era to the present day. The Commission encourages projects focused on collections of America's early legal records, such as the records of colonial, territorial, county, and early statehood and tribal proceedings that document the evolution of the nation's legal history.
