About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is soliciting applications for the Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) for Undergraduate-Focused Institutions (R15 Clinical Trial Required) with an application due date of January 7, 2027. Eligible institutions must award baccalaureate science degrees and have received no more than $6 million per year in NIH support (in both direct and F&A/indirect costs) in four of the last seven fiscal years; for institutions with multiple schools and colleges, the $6 million funding limit is calculated based on all non-health professional schools and colleges within the institution as a whole.

This NOFO supports investigator-initiated mechanistic and/or minimal risk clinical trials—defined as those that do not require FDA oversight, do not intend to formally establish efficacy, and have low risks to potentially cause physical or psychological harm—addressing the mission and research interests of participating NIH institutes and centers. Eligible applicants include public and private higher education institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions, Hispanic-serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities. Non-domestic entities and foreign components of U.S. organizations are ineligible.

The R15 activity code governs this program, which emphasizes providing biomedical research experiences primarily for undergraduate students and enhancing the research environment at applicant institutions. Participating NIH institutes and centers will be listed in the published NOFO. Awards operate under multiple parent federal grant programs spanning cancer research, cardiovascular diseases, lung diseases, mental health, substance abuse, child health, nursing research, vision research, neuroscience, and aging research. Standard NIH peer review processes apply: applications receive dual scientific review by non-NIH scientists and secondary review by relevant national advisory councils.
