About this opportunity

The Department of Energy's National Isotope Development Center Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking Type B Shipping Containers for specialized isotope transportation. These containers must meet strict technical requirements, including weighing less than 200 kilograms and obtaining certification from regulatory agencies like NRC, DOE, or equivalent EU regulatory bodies. Each container must have a comprehensive Safety Analysis Report for Packaging that details design specifications, shielding capabilities, thermal loading, and an approved list of transportable radioisotopes. The solicitation (RFP328763) was posted on April 8, 2025, with proposal responses due by April 15, 2025. Potential vendors must provide a certificate of compliance for each container and demonstrate the ability to meet complex technical specifications for nuclear material shipping.

The contract opportunity is not set aside for any specific business category and will be open to competitive bidding. The solicitation indicates a requirement for three SAFKEG 3977A (HS) Packaging units, along with associated assemblies and toolkits, to be delivered to Oak Ridge, TN 37830. While the current Bill of Materials shows zero pricing, the contract appears to be for specialized scientific shipping equipment with potentially significant technical complexity. The procurement falls under NAICS category 332439 (Other Metal Container Manufacturing) and PSC category 8145 (Specialized Shipping and Storage Containers). Contractors will need to demonstrate extensive expertise in nuclear material transportation, regulatory compliance, and precision engineering to successfully bid on this contract.
