About this opportunity
This solicitation seeks proposals for developing a new vehicle armor plating material system using diffusion bonding techniques. The contractor shall probe bonding titanium with rolled homogeneous armor steel to manufacture armor plates that are 30% lighter with equal or higher ballistic performance compared to MIL-A-12560 specifications. The Department of the Army Materiel Command TACOM Life Cycle Management Command aims to establish feasibility of meeting performance and weight requirements at a scale sufficient to enable transition to ground vehicle systems. Proposals are due by January 26, 2024 with Phase I deliverables to be completed within six months of award if selected.
The opportunity is set aside for HUBZone small businesses. It involves research and development under NAICS 541715 and PSC R408 with an anticipated award as a firm fixed-price contract from the Army Materiel Command TACOM Life Cycle Management Command. Update #2 · Latest ·
Amendment 0001 is to extend the solicitation closing date to 26 January 2024.
The contractor shall probe the use of diffusion or other novel bonding techniques to manufacture 2-layer armor plates in the form of various grades of titanium (Ti) (Ti-6AI-4V, CP-Ti, ATI425, 425 ELI, Ti108 are some examples) backed with RHA or other armor steel for high performance armor lightweighting. Depending on initial results, proof of concept and full system characterization will also be performed to establish feasibility of meeting the performance and weight requirements at sufficient scale to enable transition to ground vehicle systems.
