About this opportunity
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is conducting market research on potential vendors for a 4 Kelvin Closed Cycle Cryostat, with vendor responses due by June 26, 2026. This is a sources-sought notice, not a request for quotes, and carries no procurement commitment. NIST will evaluate responses to determine whether to pursue a small business set-aside; if at least two qualified small businesses are identified, the subsequent solicitation will be set-aside accordingly. NIST specifically requests vendors indicate the country of manufacture for the cryostat.
The cryostat will support the Physical Measurements Lab's characterization of superconducting devices, ground-state Josephson junction research, and superconducting digital logic circuit testing. The system must achieve base temperatures below 3 Kelvin using a closed-cycle design with no liquid cryogens, feature an upright sample space with minimum 250mm diameter and 225mm height to the radiation shield, deliver cooling power exceeding 1.5 watts at 4.5 Kelvin, maintain temperature variations under 50 millikelvin peak-to-peak, and complete cool-down and warm-up cycles within 2 hours each. All materials in the sample space must be non-magnetic, with specifications prohibiting nickel-flashing on gold plating and requiring replacement of steel heli-coils with non-magnetic alternatives. The cryostat must include a liquid helium pot, water-cooled compressor with electrical isolation, 96 DC electrical lines with DB25 connectors, and 24 low-resistance copper electrical lines. An optional 1 Tesla split-coil magnet is separately priced. Delivery, installation, and training must complete within 12 months after order receipt, with government acceptance requiring 21 business days.
