About this opportunity

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), operating under the Department of Energy Office of Science, is seeking information from qualified vendors regarding advanced confocal laser scanning and super-resolution optical microscopy systems capable of high-speed, multi-color fluorescence imaging with fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) and stimulated depletion emission (STED) nanoscopy capabilities. The RFI aims to gather detailed technical, functional, and operational information about current commercial systems to support BNL's development of future procurement requirements and specifications for biological, chemical, and materials research imaging applications. Vendor responses must address specific technical documentation requirements including system configuration, laser excitation sources, spectral handling capabilities, photon detection efficiency, lifetime imaging capabilities, software platform compatibility (ImageJ/Fiji, MATLAB, Python), and indicative pricing. The microscopy system must feature automated alignment, a motorized XYZ stage, lateral resolution below 50 nm for super-resolution imaging, and include a 2-year warranty on major components. Responses are due by January 30, 2026, and should be submitted electronically to Mark Brock at mbrock@bnl.gov, with vendors also expected to identify any exceptions to BNL's general terms and conditions.

This procurement includes no set-aside designations and does not identify any current incumbent contractors. The RFI documents do not specify an award value or budget range for this information-gathering phase, as the primary objective is to establish baseline technical and commercial information to inform future solicitation development. Vendors are requested to provide budgetary pricing, estimated lead times, and detailed technical specifications as part of their response. The unified microscopy platform should integrate confocal, FLIM, and STED nanoscopy technologies with features including a pulsed white light laser, multiple laser ports, and high-sensitivity photon detectors. Respondents must demonstrate compliance with BNL's quality assurance standards (BNL-QA-101), including ISO 9001 certification, and acknowledge the general terms and conditions for commercial products and services outlined in the supporting documentation.
