About this opportunity
The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has published a Notice of Intent to Sole Source a preventative maintenance and inspection contract to STERIS Corporation. This Special Notice, posted on March 23, 2026, announces the government's intention to award a firm-fixed-price service contract without competitive bidding. The contract will cover annual preventative maintenance and inspections for STERIS-manufactured laboratory equipment across three FSIS laboratory facilities located in Athens, Georgia; Normandy, Missouri; and Albany, California. The government has determined that STERIS Corporation is the sole source reasonably available to meet these requirements based on its status as the exclusive factory-authorized supplier of parts and service for multiple equipment brands including AMSCO, Finn-Aqua, Reliance, Basil, and HAMO. The contract structure includes a 12-month base year with four optional 12-month renewal periods.
The primary objective of this sole-source arrangement is to ensure proper maintenance and compliance with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) specifications for specialized laboratory sterilizers, washers, and related equipment. Interested parties should note that the April 3, 2026 deadline applies to capability statements, proposals, or quotations from any responsible source that believes it can meet the requirements, though this Notice is not formally requesting quotes. STERIS's justification for sole-source contracting centers on its exclusive distribution of OEM-manufactured replacement parts and its proprietary workforce of over 950 factory-trained specialists required to maintain equipment in compliance with manufacturer specifications. While the contract is classified under NAICS 811210 (Electronic and Precision Equipment Repair and Maintenance) and PSC J066 (Maint/Repair/Rebuild of Equipment—Instruments and Laboratory Equipment), the government has determined that only STERIS possesses the necessary factory authorization, parts availability, and trained personnel to satisfy these specialized maintenance requirements across all three laboratory locations.
