About this opportunity

The Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service issued a Notice of Intent to Sole Source gut microbiome DNA sequencing services to the University of Wisconsin Biotechnology Center, with responses due by 1:00 pm Mountain Daylight Savings Time on September 1, 2026. The ARS intends to award a firm fixed price sole source contract; the notice does not constitute a formal solicitation and the Government retains discretion to open the requirement to competition based on submitted responses.

The work involves DNA extraction and sequencing from cultures inoculated with fresh fecal samples treated with food or food components. The contractor must recruit healthy donors within ARS-specified age groups, process samples using phosphate buffer, and maintain 6–36 simultaneous miniaturized anaerobic bioreactors at 37°C over 6-, 24-, or 48-hour periods. Fermentation parameters including short chain fatty acid levels and cell numbers must be quantified; DNA must be extracted per ARS-approved methods and delivered frozen on dry ice at minimum 5 ng/µL concentration in volumes exceeding 49 µL each within 30 days of experiment completion. All pH, gas, fermentation, and DNA data transfer to ARS scientists is required. The period of performance is one year from award. No government-furnished property is provided. Responsible sources interested in the requirement must submit responses by email to Frank Palmer (frank.palmer@usda.gov). Work supports the ARS Eastern Regional Research Center in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania. The NAICS code is 541714 with a small business size standard of 1,000 employees.
