About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health Clinical Center issued a notice of intent to sole-source a purchase order to BK Medical Holding Company for BK Medical E14CL4b Biplane Endocavity transrectal and transvaginal probes on or before July 22, 2026. The acquisition is being conducted under FAR Part 13 Simplified Acquisition Procedures, which permits one-source procurement when the contracting officer determines that only one source is reasonably available.
The probes are required for the Department of Perioperative Medicine at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. BK Medical is the sole manufacturer of this specific transrectal probe compatible with the BK Medical ultrasound equipment currently in use by the department. Although other ultrasound machines exist in the market, adopting an alternative would require purchasing new ultrasound hardware; the department's existing Aloka ultrasound machine does not manufacture a compatible prostate probe for transrectal procedures, and the BK Medical probe is clinically specific to the department's protocol requirements.
This is a notice of intent only; no solicitation will be issued and quotations will not be requested. A fixed-price purchase order will be awarded directly to BK Medical Holding Company, located in Burlington, Massachusetts.

Description:
This is a notice of intent, not a request for a quotation. A solicitation document will not be issued and quotations will not be requested.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) intends to award a fixed price purchase order to BK Medical Holding Company, Inc., located at 25 Corporate Drive, STE 230, Burlington, MA, 01803, on a firm fixed price sole source award basis to provide the required supplies to the National Institutes of Health DPM.
The proposed vendor, BK Medical, is the only company that makes this specific transrectal probe for use with the BK Medical Ultrasound machine. There are other ultrasound machines on the market, however it would require purchasing the ultrasound machine to go with the probe if any other company is considered. The department does own an Aloka ultrasound machine, however they do not make a
prostate probe that can be used with the other devices Urology has to perform transrectal procedures. This probe is specific to the outcome needed for the protocol.
This acquisition is being conducted using policies unique to the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) Part 13 – Simplified Acquisition Procedures, Subpart 13.106-1(b)(1), For purchases not exceeding the simplified acquisition threshold (SAT), contracting officers may solicit from one source if the contracting officer determines that the circumstance of the contract action deem only one source reasonably available. Contracts awarded using FAR Part 13-Simplified Acquisition Procedures are exempt from the requirements of FAR Part 6-Competition Requirements.
Interested parties may identify their interest and capabilities in response to this posting. The determination by the Government not to compete the proposed requirement based upon responses to this notice is solely within the discretion of the Government.
