About this opportunity
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) intends to award a sole source contract for preventative maintenance and service of a Leica Mica WideFocal Microscope System. The system is used by NIMH researchers and scientists and requires annual calibration, preventative maintenance, on-site service by a factory-trained engineer, and software updates. The anticipated period of performance includes a 12-month base period and four option years. The essential characteristics that limit this requirement to a sole source are the need for on-site service, original manufacturer parts, prioritized response time, and specialized software expertise that can only be provided by Leica Microsystems.
This procurement is classified under NAICS code 811210 - Electronic and Precision Equipment Repair and Maintenance, with a $34 million size standard. It will be conducted under the simplified acquisition procedures of FAR Part 13, which exempts it from full and open competition requirements. Leica Microsystems, located in Deerfield, Illinois, is the only source capable of meeting the requirement. The total estimated value of the contract is not provided, but interested parties are requested to submit pricing information, delivery timelines, and other details to support the government's determination to award without full and open competition.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the nation’s leading medical research agency and the primary Federal agency whose mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability, conducting, supporting and making medical discoveries that improve people’s health and save lives.
The purpose of the requirement is to provide preventative maintenance and service for the Leica Mica WideFocal Microscope System located in the National Institute of Mental Health, Division of Intramural Research Programs, Office of the Director, Section on Cellular and Cognitive Neuroscience.
The essential characteristics of the annual preventative maintenance and service agreement for the Leica Mica WideFocal Microscope System that limit the availability to a sole source are the ability of this contractor to provide on-site service, use of replacement parts from the original manufacturer, prioritized on-site response time for remedial services, and provide any necessary software updates for the WideFocal microscope system in question.
