About this opportunity

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is seeking proposals for a modern wind turbine to be used as a research asset for demonstration of decarbonizing industrial processes, wind energy specific research and development (R&D), and grid integration R&D. The turbine should have modern power electronics, a power rating of at least 3MW, a maximum tip height of less than 500ft above ground level, and the ability to interconnect at 34.5kV among other specifications. The anticipated period of performance is from the execution date through mid-2026.

Products and Services to be provided:

  1. A modern wind turbine with specific technical specifications.
  2. Post-manufacturing support including site support during receiving of components, technical support during turbine commissioning, and IT integration of turbine into NREL network.
  3. Compliance with International Electrotechnical Committee (IEC) standards and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 6141 listing of the equipment.
  4. Participation in R&D or provision of information to NREL for utilization of the wind turbine for R&D projects.
  5. Future integration of Department of Energy (DOE) control system for management and provisions of grid services.

Update #2 · Latest ·

NREL is seeking a modern wind turbine that can be used as a research asset for demonstration of decarbonizing industrial processes, wind energy specific research and development (R&D), and grid integration R&D as part of the ARIES (advanced research of integrated energy systems) platform.
As such the turbine needs to have modern power electronics and the manufacturer needs to be willing to either participate in R&D or provide information to NREL to allow utilization of the wind turbine for R&D projects which may require non-standard operation (for example, changing (part of) the blade for aerodynamics research, direct current (DC) coupling the turbine with other assets on campus, deploying novel wind plant control schemes)
